Recently, through a series of events, I was asked to create a Life Celebration Ceremony for a family whose daughter passed the year before. The time with the family was sacred and touching…and fun!
The mother was on her third try to have a shaman help with the ceremony when she and I we were finally able to connect. It had been an emotional time, due to the nature of the death of her daughter…a suicide. I knew that this was definitely something that I wanted to be a part of. During my morning meditation, as I asked whether I should, my body told me YES and I could feel, emotionally, what was going on. I also consulted with peers in Sedona who I deeply respect to offer their perspective and wisdom, which they did.
As we chatted on the phone and our nervousness fell away, we realized that we were all on the same frequency and this was going to be a beautiful creation between us. We drove to the secluded creek and laughed as we talked about what an amazing life her daughter led. She lived a life of service to the most difficult parts of society and continually taught her own daughter the same values.
A “Grief” altar and a “Forgiveness” altar were created, as well as a sacred center altar. We gathered in circle as something that has long since passed from our normal lives…but, not that day. We all spoke openly about what our intention was and shared how their loved one had touched their lives. Ashes were spread, Native American flute played, hearts opened and didgeridoo brought everyone into Oneness.
A couple of days later, I was blessed when I received a testimonial from the family for their appreciation of the ceremony. Their hearts were lifted and burdens lightened. We all did what their daughter would have loved…remember and honor her physical life, know that she is well and with us…and have fun together!
